This may be one of the most important subjects I've ever written about, so allow me to get right to the core of what it means to be "Christian". Christianity is an indwelling Presence! Jesus promised He would not leave us as orphans. He would ask the Father and He would give us another "Paraclete" - a counselor and comforter, an encourager and advocate. The Father is in the Son; the Father and Son are in the Spirit; and the Father, Son, and Spirit live within the hearts of believing people. The Holy Spirit dwells in men and clothes Himself with holy, consecrated humanity. He uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. His only conditions are surrender, obedience, and faith. Jesus said, "Do not believe me unless I do what my Father does. But if I do it, even though you do not believe me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father." John 10:37,38 NIV The Father worked miracles through the Son and that was all the proof anyone needed. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit work within the human heart. And that is the miracle of the new birth which changes lives and makes new creations. "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" 2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV The proof is in the new life! Old habits are changed and new desires fill the heart. New desires such as: reading the Bible, going to church, talking to God every day, and sharing the love of Jesus with others. The Holy Spirit creates within the heart a desire to please God and the will to do right with confidence. One of the great Methodist preachers whom I highly admire is Samuel Chadwick. He made one of the most profound statements I've ever read on this subject, "Christ lives in men through the Spirit. He is no longer a model but a living Presence. Christian faith does not copy Him; it lives Him. Christ is not imitated, but reproduced." The essence of Christianity is that the life of. Jesus Christ should be reproduced in born-again humanity. And the essence of His life is in the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. This life finds no conflict with law. Chadwick also said, "The Christian life is not a philosophy to be debated, not an ordinance to be observed, or an ethic to be achieved." Above all else, Christianity is a life that must be imparted and lived. It is a gift of God. It is eternal life. It is eternal in its quality and Divine in nature. It is the life of God in man in all its fullness and fruition. Jesus is the way, truth, and life. He said that He came to give life in abundance. And that life is in the indwelling Presence of the Holy Spirit sent from God. The very Spirit and Life of Jesus as He continues to five in human flesh. That, I think in a nut-shell, is what Christianity is all about. Are you a Christian? Have you been born-again? Is Jesus living His life through you?
