However, the driver had other plans and proceeded north up Highway 331 towards Opp. As the chase continued, the Opp Police Department joined in and was able to get the driver to Stop at the intersection of Highway 331 and Indian Creek Road. Opp Police Department Assistant Chief Kevin Chance said officers ordered the driver off the mo- torcycle. It appeared the driver was complying when in fact the motorcycle suddenly sped off. OPD officers followed the motorcycle and the driver eventually pulled into a residence off Substation Road and stopped. When officers attempted to arrest the driver a brief struggle ensued but officers were able to get the subject into custody with no injuries to the driver or officers. The driver of the motorcycle was identified as 47-year-old John McCarthy, Jr. He was arrested and charged with assault III, obstructing governmental operations, three counts of reckless driving and two counts of attempting to elude and booked into the Covington County Jail on a $12,000 bond.
