'I AM TOO YOUNG A common fallacy about ex- cessive drinking is that the only person who becomes an alcoholic is the man in his fifties or sixties. It is not your age nor how many years you have been drinking, but what drinking is doing to you and whether you have control over it, which de- termines whether alcohol is a problem. Whenever a person becomes dependent upon alcohol and has lost control of his drinking, he is a problem drinker of an al- coholic, and he had better do something about it. Loss of control can occur anytime in a person's drinking history. A young man 18 years old found that every time he drank he became intoxicated even though he did not want nor intend to. He was an al- coholic. Age has very little to do with alcoholism. It can attack a person at almost any age. The young man or woman who re- peatedly gets drunk inten- tionally or unintentionally is already in trouble, and may be hooked. If you have been getting into any kind of difficulty because of drinking, get help before your problem gets worse. For you can be sure that if you continue to drink, it will get worse• Alcoholism is a pro- gressive, fatal disease if not treated• If you want to drink, that's your business. If you want to stop, there is help available. If you want help, or if you have a relative or friend who needs help, contact your Alcoholism Information Center, P.O. Box 627, phone number 222-2523 in Andalusia, Alabama, or call 858-9661 in Florala, Alabama. Your visits and your phone calls will be in strict confidence.
