The Oxford English dictionary defines infec- tion as "The process of infecting or the state of being infected; Contami- nation." Common infec- tions, left unattended can be dangerous and giardia infection is no exception. Giardia infection is an intestinal infection marked by abdominal cramps, bloating, nau- sea and bouts of watery diarrhea. Giardia infec- tion is caused by a mi- croscopic parasite that is found worldwide, es- pecially in areas with poor sanitation and un- safe water. It is easy to get, but easy to avoid, too. According to re- searchers at Mayo Clinic, giardia infection (giardiasis) is one of the most common causes of waterborne disease in the United States. The 'parasites are usually found in backcountry streams and lakes but can also show up in mu- nicipal water supplies, swimming pools, whirl- pool spas and wells. Gi- ardia infection can also be transmitted through food and person-to-per- son contact. Giardia infections usually clear up within a few weeks, but it can leave behind intestinal problems long after the parasites are gone. Sev- eral drugs are generally effective against giar- dia parasites, but not everyone responds to them. Prevention is the best defense. The most common way to become infected with giardia is after swallowing contami- nated water. Giardia parasites are found in lakes, ponds, rivers and streams worldwide, as well as in municipal wa- ter supplies, wells, cis- terns, Swimming pools, water parks and spas. Giardia parasites can be transmitted through food -- either because food handlers with gi- ardiasis don't wash their hands thoroughly or because raw produce is irrigated or washed with contaminated wa- ter. Parents changing a child's diapers are especially at risk, as are child care workers and children in child care centers, where out- breaks are increasingly common. When signs and symptoms are severe or the infection persists, physicians usually treat giardiasis with medica- tions. No drug or vac- cine can prevent giardia infection, but common- sense precautions can go a long way toward reducing the chances of becoming infected or spreading the infection to others. The simplest and best way to prevent most kinds of infection is to wash your hands, especially after using the toilet, changing dia- pers and before eating or preparing food. When soap and water aren't available, alcohol-based sanitizers are an accept- able alternative. Avoid drinking untreated wa- ter from shallow wells, lakes, rivers, springs, ponds and streams. Try not to swallow wa- ter when swimming in pools, lakes or streams. For more informa- tion, contact Dr. Mark Hash at Healthmark Walk-In Clinic, (850) 951-4556. v
